RECALL UPDATE: Generac and DR Portable Generators recalled due to finger amputation, crush hazards

November 11, 2022 | By Staff

This is an update from a year ago, when a joint recall with Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Generac Power Systems Inc. was issued recalling Generac and DR 6500W and 8000W portable generators.

Affected products:  This 2022 recall involves the Generac and DR brand 6500 watt and 8000 watt gasoline-powered portable generators on two wheels with a U-shaped flip-up handle for use when moving the generator. The affected generators can be identified by the model numbers in the tables. The model number and serial number can be found on the data plate, attached to the frame of the generator.

Issue: The folding handle on the side of the generators can pinch the user’s fingers, posing an amputation and crush hazard, unless the locking pin has been properly inserted to secure the handle in place before and after moving the generator.

Update on incidents reported: As of November 8, 2022, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. In the United States, the company has received a total of 37 reports of injuries including 24 reports of finger amputation and 5 of crush injuries.

Information from the 2021 recall: The folding handle on these generators can pinch a user’s fingers, posing an amputation and crush hazard, unless the locking pin has been properly inserted to secure the handle in place before and after moving the generator.

The recall involves Generac and DR 6500W and 8000W gasoline-powered portable generators. The units have two wheels and a single, U-shaped, two-grip, flip-up pin-lock handle to help move the generator.

Only the generators listed on Health Canada’s recall notice are included in this recall.

The model number and serial number can be found on the data plate, attached to the frame of the generator.

As of June 29, 2021, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. In the United States, the company has received eight (8) reports of finger injuries, including seven reports of finger amputation and one crush injury.

Approximately 4574 units of the affected product were sold in Canada, and about 321,160 in the United States. Manufactured in the United States and China, these units were sold from June 2013 to June 2021.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled portable generators, unless the locking pin has been inserted to secure the handle in place before and after moving the generator, and contact Generac for a free repair kit.

Remember: the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.
